Windscribe is an independent Canadian VPN best known for its free plan: 10 GB a month once you confirm your email, with access to around ten countries, including the US, Canada, Germany and the UK.

On the paid side you can buy full access or build your own plan from selected locations, with no device limit. Servers run in RAM, the apps are open source and the R.O.B.E.R.T. filter blocks ads and malicious domains. Windscribe no longer runs a traditional affiliate programme.

Privacy track record

2021. Ukrainian authorities seized two Windscribe servers. The company disclosed itself that their disks held an OpenVPN certificate and private key, which under narrow conditions could let someone impersonate the server to users of manual OpenVPN configurations. Afterwards it moved its whole network to RAM-only servers.

2025. A court in Athens dismissed a criminal case against Windscribe’s CEO over an attack routed through one of the company’s servers in Finland. Windscribe showed it had no logs that could identify the attacker.
