NordVPN has one of the widest networks of any service we compare. Worth knowing, though: a large share of those countries are virtual locations. If you just need the IP address, that doesn’t matter. If latency matters to you, check the country page to see whether the server is actually there.

It uses NordLynx (its version of WireGuard) by default, and its servers run in RAM. There’s also Threat Protection to block ads and known malicious sites, plus Double VPN and Onion over VPN servers. It belongs to Nord Security, the same group as Surfshark.

Privacy track record

Documented incidents and legal tests. How a provider responded matters as much as what happened.

2018. An attacker got into one NordVPN server at a Finnish data centre through an insecure remote-management system left by the hosting provider, and took TLS keys. NordVPN said the server held no user logs or credentials. It disclosed the breach in October 2019, then moved to RAM-only servers and regular audits.

2024. NordVPN’s transparency report says it received a binding order from the Panamanian prosecutor’s office in October 2024. It could hand over only payment data and confirmation that an account existed for the email address provided.
