Hotspot Shield has been around since 2008 and belongs to Pango Group, which merged with Total Security, the maker of TotalAV, in 2024 to form Point Wild. Its main protocol is Hydra, its own design built for speed, and in 2023 Aon reviewed its no-logs claims.

The list covers 85 countries, and the provider notes that the India location runs via Singapore. Premium covers 10 devices. The free plan gives you 500 MB a day on one device, with the US as the only location.

Privacy track record

Documented incidents and legal tests. How a provider responded matters as much as what happened.

2017. The Center for Democracy and Technology filed a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission, alleging that the free Hotspot Shield app shared data with advertising networks and injected tracking code into users’ traffic, contrary to its privacy promises. AnchorFree, the owner at the time, denied the claims.

2018. A researcher found that a local web server built into the Hotspot Shield app could let websites learn details about users, such as their country and Wi-Fi network name (CVE-2018-6460). The company released a fix within days.

2024. Aura, which had bought Pango in 2020, split Pango Group off as a separate company. In December Pango merged with Total Security to form Point Wild.
