Private Internet Access has been running since 2010 and is one of the few providers with fully open-source apps. It’s strongest in the United States, with locations in every state, which helps if you need an IP address from a particular part of the country.

The app gives you plenty of control (protocol, encryption, port forwarding), and there’s no limit on devices. The service belongs to Kape Technologies.

Privacy track record

Documented incidents and legal tests. How a provider responded matters as much as what happened.

2016. In an FBI investigation into hoax bomb threats in Florida, a subpoena to PIA’s operator produced only the fact that the IP addresses belonged to a server cluster on the US east coast. There was no data identifying the user.

2016. Russian authorities seized some of PIA’s servers in Russia without notice. The company said no user data was exposed because it keeps no logs, pulled out of Russia and rotated its certificates.

2018. In the trial of Ross Colby in San Jose, a PIA representative testified under oath that the company keeps no activity logs and could not link the IP addresses used to any customer.
