ExpressVPN has been running since 2009 and since 2021 has belonged to Kape Technologies, the same group as Private Internet Access and CyberGhost. Its own Lightway protocol is built to reconnect quickly when your network changes, for example when your phone moves from Wi-Fi to mobile data.

Servers use TrustedServer technology and run entirely in RAM, so nothing is left after a reboot. The basic plan covers 10 devices and higher tiers up to 14, and a router app lets you put consoles and TVs behind the VPN.

Privacy track record

2017. Turkish investigators seized an ExpressVPN server while investigating the assassination of the Russian ambassador Andrei Karlov. The company said it had no connection or activity logs that could identify the user.

2021. It emerged that ExpressVPN’s chief information officer Daniel Gericke had, before joining the company, worked on hacking operations for the UAE (Project Raven). He entered a deferred prosecution agreement with the US Department of Justice. ExpressVPN kept him in his role.
