HMA started in 2005 as HideMyAss, a free web proxy built by a British teenager, and added a paid VPN in 2009. AVG bought it in 2015, and it now belongs to Gen Digital, the group behind Norton and Avast.

Its server list covers 65 countries and doesn’t mark any location as virtual, although HMA says a few of its servers are. The basic plan covers 5 devices, with a 10-device option, and its no-logs policy was reviewed by VerSprite in 2020.

Key features

  • No-logs review by VerSprite (2020)
  • 5 or 10 devices
  • Lightning Connect and split tunneling

Privacy and security

  • Independent audit published yes
  • Open-source apps no
  • Servers run in RAM only not confirmed
  • Obfuscation to bypass VPN blocks not confirmed

Privacy track record

Documented incidents and legal tests. How a provider responded matters as much as what happened.

2011. After the LulzSec attack on Sony Pictures, HMA complied with a UK court order and handed over records that helped the FBI identify Cody Kretsinger, a member of the group who had used the service. HMA said using its VPN for illegal activity broke its terms.

2020. HMA introduced a no-logs policy and stopped recording users’ original IP addresses. Its policy still lets it keep the connection date, a rough time of day and the amount of data used for 35 days.

Where HMA has servers

HMA doesn’t say which of its locations are virtual, so we can’t confirm that its servers are physically in these countries. We show them as “not confirmed”.
